in novembre entrerà in funzione il nuovo bagno turco. E' un anno che ci penso, un giorno mi è nata l' idea: creare una struttura a igloo, in esterno, a se stante, sotto un larice secolare, foderarlo di neve e ghiaccio. al suo interno vapore caldo e buio pesto, con panche in marmo nero e una sola lama di luce che dal soffitto illumina.......qualcosa che non posso dirvi...è una sorpresa e vi garantisco che chi si sottoporrà a questa sorta di rito iniziatico sarà veramente sorpreso...

Questa mattina fuori c'era -20 e un nostro ospite coreano voleva andare a sciare senza giaccavento, solo con il maglione, allora ho preso la mia giaccavento, l'ho rincorso e glie l'ho indossata a forza, gli ho chiuso la zip e l'ho spedito con la navetta a sciare. Di ritorno la moglie mi ha portato un contenitore con dentro la soba, tagliolini di grano saraceno da allungare con una salsa piccantissima e acqua calda. di ritorno dalla sauna l'ho mangiato in un sol boccone con le annesse bacchette chiaramente...

Finalmente dopo mesi di attesa Ermanno il nostro elettricista di fiducia ha potuto montare i coprilampade nuovi... come sempre bisogna fare mille peripezie per ottenere qualcosa e come dice sempre un mio amico francese una bella cosa è fatta da 1% di "ideation" e 99% di "transpiration"!
Li avevo visti a casa dei miei amici molto eccentrici Giorgio e Lilla, mi erano piacciute subito molto. Molto lungo il concepimento, a iniziare dal benestare del mitico designer Paul Navillod, molto lunga la ricerca di un fabbricatore (ne abbiamo cambiati 2) lunga l'installazione, i primi contatti con l'elettricista avuti in settembre! l'impianto è stato trasformato in 12v per consentire un istallazione bassissima a pochi centimetri del tavolo, cosi che chi lo desidera può anche farle dondolare o versarci sopra dei liquidi senza morire folgorato! E offrono un atmosfera ancor più soft...color by Sara

nel '62 quando papà Maurizio con il nonno Graziano cominciò a costruire l'albergo iniziò anche a pensare a come intitolare il suo sogno. Costruire un albergo qui, fuori dal centro era considerato dai valligiani un progetto non solo ardito ma anche un pò folle. Forse è anche per questo che la nostra famiglia è considerata una famiglia di artisti!

Papà allora era molto appassionato di letteratura e aveva conosciuto i versi delle poesie di Francois Villon musicate dal chansonnier Georges Brassens.

l'utilizzo del termine "d'antan" nella poesia viene utilizzato per comparare gli amori passati alle nevi che si sono sciolte e non torano più, come gli amori...

20 anni prima che questo modo di dire fosse sulla bocca di tutti, nella filosofia di papà era già ben chiaro quel concetto

ora tutto è "d'antan": le vecchie foto, una cosa fatta bene, con calma, come una volta, un atmosfera, una cosa che appartiene al passato e non torna più, "d'antan" è un modo di dire che viene usato un po per rimpiangere i tempi passati

A Cervinia è sorto un ristorante ai piedi di una pista da sci ed è stato chiamato "les skieurs d'antan", in un villaggio vicino al nostro c'è il "caffè d'antan", un negozio di prodotti tipici a fondo valle si chiama "les saveurs d'antan".

Ieri sono andato a visitare una splendida mostra di opere d'arte raffiguranti il Cervino e non mi sono tanto stupito di vedere un titolo che raggruppava una serie di 8 antichi dipinti:

In 1962, when my father Maurizio and his father Graziano began building the hotel, they also started thinking about what to call their dream. Building a hotel here, outside the town, was considered not only as daring, but also rather crazy, by the locals. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why our family is considered as being a family of artists!
At that time, my father loved literature, and he had encountered FranÁois Villonís poetry set to music by Georges Brassens.
In the poem, the term d'antan is used to compare the loves of yesterday to snow that has melted and that will never return, like those lovers.
Twenty years before this expression was used by all and sundry, my father already had this concept and approach to life very clear in his mind.
Nowadays, ìdíantanî is used to describe just about anything: old photos, something made well, slowly, in the traditional way; an atmosphere, something that belongs to the past and that will never return. In short, ìdíantanî is an expression of nostalgia for times past.
In Cervinia, a restaurant has been opened at the bottom of a ski slope, and it is named ìLes skieurs díantan.î In a village near us, there is the caffè d'antan. A shop of traditional products down in the valley is named Les saveurs d'antan.
Yesterday I went to see a fine exhibition of works of art depicting Mount Cervino, and I wasnít surprised at all when I saw the title that had been used for a series of eight period prints: Les neiges d'antan!

ieri solo soletto ho vagato lungo l' Unter Theodulgletscher: il ghiaccaio che parte dalla gobba di Rollin e che dopo essersi fuso con il Grenzgletscher e il Gornergletscher termina, non lontano da Furi. ogni anno si può notare un arretramento del ghiaccia infatti quella che era un enorme caverna di ghiaccio ora è una grotta e purtroppo tra qualche anno non ci sarà piu. Consiglio "caldamente"gli sciatori medio bravi un giorno di prendersi una guida alpina, fare la discesa e attraversare la grotta di ghiaccio che un giorno sarà sciolta. Guardate cosa la natura ha creato lì sotto...

2 simpatici ospiti belgi di 70 anni ciascuno sono arrivati con la loro Audi 80 di 18 anni e hanno trascorso 9 giorni di vacanza sugli sci sciando tutti i giorni dalle 9 alle 4 favoriti da un tempo splendido. Lei Anna Marie racconta di dormire talvolta ancora nel camera e nel letto in cui è nata!
Tra gli altri ho un obbiettivo nella mia vita: riuscire a sciare come loro fino a 70 anni...

Two lovely guests, a Belgian couple, each aged 70, arrived in their 18-year old Audi 80, and spent nine days' holiday with us, skiing every day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., benefiting from the splendid weather. She, Anna Maria, says that she still sometimes sleeps in the room and in the bed in which she was born!

Io faccio una sauna al giorno...oh sono convinto che levi il medico di torno!
Ho cominciato a utilizzare la sauna con mio fratello quando si spaccò le due gambe, per la riabilitazione andavamo quasi tutti i giorni alla piscina di Verres dove c'è anche una piccola sauna. A ogni sessione mi caricavo il fratello in spalla e lo portavo a fare la doccia fredda. era una cosa trucidissima però abbiamo cominciato a prenderci gusto. Anni dopo poi quando abbiamo deciso di creare la zona wellness mi sono accanito a costruirne una vera, come quelle che si trovano in Finlandia. Ho passato dei mesi a cercare informazioni su internet ho frequentato dei forum e siti dove dei finlandesi davano indicazioni su come costruire la sauna ideale. Ho studiato i modi di utilizzo, la storia, la filosofia, l'anima della sauna: il Löyly, l'aria calda che ti inonda quando getti l'acqua sulle pietre!
Ora quando devo convincere qualche finlandese a venire in albergo gli parlo del Löyly della mia Sauna e da oggi gli potrò anche mostrare il diploma che mi hanno inviato gli ospiti finlandesi che l'hanno provata a inizio anno.

La mia ex moglie, quella che mi ha gentilmente donato la bara ( vedi vecchi post marzo 2009 ) ora vuole che linki al mio blog la pagina web del suo allevamento di cani chihuahua! non ha del grottesco tutto ciò?
E con questi Lorenzo nostro figlio ha 8 cani e 2 gatti: Sir George, Lucy, Hanesel, Perla, Tuta, Cora il marito di Cora (che sulla pagina non viene manco considerato)...e i 3 nuovi nascituri. Tranquilli non vivono tutti in albergo!

Eureka!!! Dopo 4 mesi di incessante lavoro, senza un giorno intero di riposo, ho ricominciato la mia attività sciistica. Con gli sci nuovi ai piedi e le pelli salgo i pendii che attorniano l'albergo per poi fiondarmi giù nei boschi, sulle nevi vergini. Con me il fedele Hansel che devo aspettare perchè con 4 zampe affonda e rischio di fargli scoppiare il cuore! Bello andarci all'imbrunire quando da lontano si vedono le fioche luci della frazione che ti aiutano nell' orientamento. Poi una bella sauna. Non c'è quasi null'altro di meglio!!!

At last!! After four months of non-stop work and without a complete dayís break, Iíve started skiing again. With skis and skins, I climbed the slopes around the hotel and then set off downhill on the fresh snow in the forest. I had my faithful hound Hansel with me, and I had to wait for him regularly because his paws sank into the snow and he would risk exhaustion if I ski-ed full speed! Itís lovely to ski like this at dusk, when you can see the faint lights of the village far away, helping you keep your sense of direction. Then a good sauna. Thereís not much better in the world!

La Seuppa nel nostro ristorante viene preparata tutti i giorni ma il sabato la facciamo in modo speciale e la proponiamo a tutti gli ospiti, anche quelli che fanno la mezza pensione: cotta nelle grandi pirofile in ghisa, la mettiamo a cuocere il pomeriggio e cuoce piano piano...mi ricordo che il sabato, da ragazzo, quando ho cominciato a lavorare a fine servizio avevo una fame da lupo e mio nonno "grand père" che faceva lo chef in cucina mi serviva un enorme piatto di seuppa oltre a una bistecca da muratore (come la chiamava lui)

Nostro nonno ce la faceva spesso la seuppa, ma più ancora ci faceva la valpellenentze “estiva”, con le zucchine fresche dell’orto al posto dei cavoli... e poi ci raccontava come quella zuppa dei “poveri” aveva sconfitto un tempo “in singolar tenzone” gli spaghetti alla carbonara del leggendario Moro di Roma... erano scesi fino alla capitale con le fontine in macchina, destinazione: RAI – Colazione allo Studio 7, diretta da Luigi Veronelli.

Nuovo organico a les neiges d'antan, residente annuale, addetto alla sicurezza si chiama Hansel con sua sorella Gretel erano stati addottati da mio cugino e sua Moglie. Purtroppo il loro matrimonio non è andato bene così hanno dovuto trovargli una nuova dimora: Gretel è andata ad abitare dalla sorella di uno dei testimoni di nozze e Hansel da noi...Inizialmente non volevamo tenerlo perchè troppo rumoroso rischiava di disturbare i clienti ma poi si è abituato alla nuova situazione e ha imparato a comportarsi bene. Siamo diventati amici e ora siamo inseparabili...Hansel al pari dei miei migiori amici dà senza chiedere...

Unfortunately their marriage came to an end, and so Hansel and Gretel had to find a new home. Gretel went to live with the sister of one of the best men at the wedding, and Hansel came to stay with us. At first we didn't want to keep him, because he was rather noisy and could have disturbed our guests, but he soon got used to his new habitat and learnt to behave well. We became friends and now we are inseparable... Hansel, like the best of friends, gives without having to be asked...

uh quante ne sono successe dal mio ultimo post...
Innanzi tutto cercherò di spiegarvi per quale motivo non ho più aggiornato il blog...
Finalmente in questi giorni abbiamo reso operativa due nuove linee adsl che garantiranno ai clienti il collegamento a internet wi-fi in tutto l'albergo, velocissimo a prezzi modici forfettari. Durante tutta la primavera ed estate abbiamo avuto grossi problemi di connessione, improvvisamente da un giorno all'altro si è verificato un problema, a detta dei tecnici più arguti, misterioso ed inspiegabile: il mio I mac ha smesso di connettersi ad internet con i normali browser ma skipe continuava a funzionare, il mio portatile power book in condivisione internet con l' I mac si collegava regolarmente seppur molto lentamente!!! come si collegasse non ve lo so spiegare, questo è uno dei tanti misteri de les neiges d'antan, qui spesso succedono cose inspiegabili. Sarà dato dalla particolarità del luogo e della gente che vi confluisce? non so...

Well, all sorts of things have happened from my last post... First of all, I must explain why I haven't updated the blog for ages. Recently we activated two new ADSL lines which ensure that all our guests can use the Internet via wi-fi throughout the hotel, very fast and at very good rates. During spring and summer, we had a lot of problems with Internet connections, and suddenly one day there was another problem, which, according to the technicians, was even more mysterious and inexplicable: my iMac refused Internet connections with the usual browser, even though Skype was still working; but my PowerBook laptop, using a shared connection with the iMac, functioned on the Internet, even though very slowly!!! I don't know exactly how the laptop managed to get to the Internet, it's just one of those mysteries of Les neiges d'antan. All sorts of mysterious things happen here. Perhaps because the location is so unusual, and likewise the people who visit us? I honestly don't know...

Ora cercherò di ricapitolare quello che è successo:
La stagione invernale è finita bene, abbiamo avuto una buona affluenza, anche se non eccezzionale vuoi per la grave crisi economica mondiale scoppiata proprio alla partenza della stagione vuoi perchè ha nevicato tanto !....(?) si assurdo quando nevica tanto da tutte le parti qui a Cervinia lavoriamo meno!!! infatti la neve a Cervinia è assicurata dalle tante perturbazioni, dall'altezza e dal conesguente freddo che a differenza delle stazioni piu basse quindi piu calde conserva la neve fino a maggio. Infatti a cervinia non ricordo sia mai successo che non si potesse scendere sci ai piedi in paese il primo maggio! quest' anno eccezzionale c'era ancora neve addirittura a fine maggio infatti una mattina a impianti chiusi partendo dall'albergo con le pelli di foca sotto gli sci, son salito fino a plateau rosa.

Overall we have had a good number of guests, though not exceptional, possibly due to the global crisis that began right at the start of the season, and also - and this may seem strange to you - because it snowed a lot!! In fact, when it snows a lot everywhere, here in Cervinia there's less business for us! The reason for this is that in Cervinia, snow is guaranteed by the local weather conditions, the altitude and the cold, which, unlike lower resorts, guarantees that we have snow right through to May. I don't think that there has ever been a year in which it was no longer possible to ski right down into town on the 1st of May! This year, as I said, there were exceptional snowfalls, right up until the end of May. One morning, when the ski-lifts were no longer operating, I left the hotel on skis with sealskins, and I climbed up to Plateau Rosa.

Mio fratello Luca era dalla nascita che passava le vacanze di Natale in albergo.
In famiglia è sempre stata una priorità assoluta: lavorare a Natale, Santo Stefano, Capodanno e l'Epifania, lavorare come dei pazzi; tutte le braccia della famiglia erano chiamate ad apportare il proprio contributo per la missione di famiglia: les neiges d'antan.

Quest'anno durante le feste di Natale per il primo anno dopo 45 anni Luca non si è sacrificato come tutti gli anni ed è andato in Africa, in Burkina Faso a fare delle riprese cinematografiche ad un gruppo di musicisti, ha stretto amicizia con uno di loro e gli ha promesso che lo avrebbe invitatato in un posto che non poteva immaginarsi: in un albergo in legno attorniato da montagne altissime immerso nella bianca neve. Il musicista africano ha accettato la sfida ed è venuto a trovarci e per ricambiare dell'ospitalità ha improvvisato un concerto di musiche tribali in torno al fuco...

My brother has spent the Christmas holidays in the hotel ever since he was born. In our family, work has always been a priority, and particularly at that time of year. We work on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day and Epiphany, even harder than at other times of the season, and all members of the family join forces to keep the family mission, Les neiges d'antan, safely on course.
This year, for the first time in 45 years, Luca decided to do something different for a change, and he went to Burkina Faso in Africa in order to film a group of musicians. He made friends with one of them, and invited him to a location that he would never have imagined: a wooden hotel immersed in the whitest snow and surrounded by high mountains. The African musician accepted the challenge, came to visit us, and in return for our hospitality, he improvised a concert of tribal music around the fire...

Abbiamo sciato il ghiacciaio dello Cherillon e la Tête de Valpelinne. Poi sono corso giù per un atro carico di noccioline!

Qualche anno fa sono andato ad Alagna. Appena arrivato in questo posto a me sconosciuto sito dall'altra parte della montagna, entro in un bar, mi siedo al banco e ordino una bottiglia di Gattinara, il Barmam sgrana gli occhi e stupito mi chiede se intendo bere la bottiglia da solo, io gli rispondo che sicuramente avrei trovato qualcuno con cui gustarla, infatti, da lì a poco, arrivano degli amici del barman che invito a bere con me. Quella sera abbiamo fatto una grande festa e come spesso accade dopo una festa siamo diventati amici. Negli anni a seguire quando andavo ad Alagna andavo sempre a trovare il barman Sergio Colla e qualche anno dopo, quando il nostro mitico Barman Paolo Bardi, dopo 30 anni di servizio, è andato in pensione, gli ho chiesto se voleva diventare il Barman de Les neiges d'antan, Sergio ha accettato. Un giorno, Sergio, dopo essere tornato da un riposo, a casa, dall'atra parte della montagna, mi ha chiesto se per caso conoscevo dei Bich che negli anni 50' gestivano un albergo a Cervinia perché il suo vecchio padre Dino aveva lavorato come cameriere da loro ed erano diventati amici... Quell'albergatore di Cevinia degli anni 50' era mio nonno !
Nel 1950 alla fine della stagione invernale mio nonno Graziano ha referenziato il papà di Sergio. Questo è il documento che Sergio ha trovato in un cassetto dopo che il vecchio padre è morto...

A few years ago I went to Alagna. As soon as I had arrived, in this place on the other side of the mountain where I had never been before, I went into a bar, sat down at the counter, and ordered a bottle of Gattinara wine. The barman looked at me in surprise and asked me if I intended to drink the bottle alone. I replied that I was sure that I would find someone with whom to enjoy it, and in fact, soon after, some people arrived, friends of the barman, and I invited them to have some wine with me. That evening turned into a brilliant party, and, as often happens after a party, we became friends. Over the following years, when I went to Alagna I always looked up the barman Sergio Colla. A few years later, when our famed barman Paolo Bardi retired after 30 years service, I asked Sergio if he would like to take over the bar at Les neiges d’antan, and he accepted. One day, on his return from a break at home on the other side of the mountain, he asked me if I knew of some people named Bich who had run a hotel in Cervinia, because his father Dino had worked as a waiter in that hotel and they had become good friends… That hotelier in Cervinia during the 1950s was my grandfather! In 1950, at the end of the winter season, my grandfather Graziano gave a reference to Sergio’s father. This is the document that Sergio found in a drawer after his father had died…
(The letter, written on notepaper headed “Hotel Edoardo Bich, Cervinia-Breuil, 2004 metres, telephone n° 21”, runs as follows: Certificate. I hereby certify that I employed Dino Colla as a waiter from 17 February to 25 April 1950. I was satisfied by his work, and I would warmly recommend him to other employers. He left my employment at the end of the season. Cervinia, 25 April 1950. Signed Graziano Bich”.

Le feste sono passate e nelle montagne è tornata la quiete. Tutto bene...solo 10 giorni fa eravamo preoccupati su come sarebbero andate; ora guardando indietro possiamo dire " è andata bene" clienti soddisfatti, buon afflusso... malgrado la crisi...

The holiday season is over, and the mountains have returned to their normal peace and calm. Everything went well… just ten days ago we were worried about how things were going to go. Looking back, we can say that everything went just fine: satisfied customers, and a good number of them, notwithstanding the crisis…

l'altro ieri è tornata a scaldare la caldaia a legna! A causa del maltempo non abbiamo potuto rifornirci del cippato ( piccoli pezzi di legna sminuzzati ) mai come quest'anno tanta neve! Per un mese intero la stradina che porta all'albergo è rimasta imbiancata e i grossi camion non riuscivano a consegnarci il combustibile... Ma l'altro ieri da Cortemiglia (CN) è arrivato un bilico di 100 metri cubi di gusci di nocciole che scalderanno sia l'acqua sanitaria che i termosifoni dei nostri ospiti durante tutte le vacanze di Natale. Chiaramente il bilico non poteva raggiungerci, a mal a pena è riuscito a salire la valle e per fortuna non ha trovato nessun intoppo altrimenti se si fosse fermato a causa delle forti perndenze non sarebbe più riuscito a ripartire! La società degli impianti di risalita ci ha dato il permesso di scaricare l'enorme volume di nocciole in un parcheggio a pochi km dall'albergo, poi con dei piccoli camion da 10 metri cubi l'uno abbiamo riempito il silos. E' stato impressionante veder scaricare la valanga di gusci dall'enorme bilico! Un sacco di passanti si sono fermati a guardare incuriositi. Ma alla fine che bello bruciare gli scarti della lavorazione delle nocciole al posto del fetente gasolio! La nuova caldaia, come tutto quello che facciamo, è stata molto sofferta. Da quando abbiamo cominciato gli scavi sono passati 3 anni, per ricavare lo spazio dove costruirla segato una montagna di roccia, subito ritardi di installazione di oltre un anno, costata 200.000,00 €...qundi cercate di capirmi se divento idrofobo quando rimaniamo seza combustibile e devo bruciare il fetente gasolio !!!
Per chi non lo sapesse il mio nuovo slogan è... mangiate la crema di Re Carlo!

The day before yesterday, the wood-fired boiler started up again! Due to bad weather, we were unable to replenish our stores of wood chips, because there has never been as much snow as this year. The lane leading up to the hotel has been continuously snow-bound, and the large lorries could not deliver us the fuel. But the day before yesterday, a tip-up lorry arrived from Cortemiglia (near Cuneo) with a hundred cubic metres of hazelnut shells, which will be used to heat tapwater and power the heating for our guests during the Christmas holidays. Of course, the lorry couldn’t reach us: it had difficulty even just coming up the valley, and luckily it did not run into any blocks caused by traffic, because, given the steep slopes, if it had stopped it wouldn’t have been able to get going again! The ski-lift company gave us permission to unload this vast quantity of hazelnut shells in a car-park a few kilometres from the hotel, and then a series of small lorries, each carrying ten cubic metres, ferried the shells and filled our silos. It was amazing to see the articulated lorry tip out all those nutshells! A lot of passers-by stopped to watch the scene. But it was all worth it: it’s fantastic to be able to burn a waste-product from hazelnut production rather than using smelly heating oil! The new boiler was, like everything we do, a complicated project. From the moment that we started excavation, three years have gone by. We created space for it by cutting into a vast wall of rock. Then there was over a year’s delay in installation, at a cost of 200,000 euro… so try to understand me if I dislike wasting hot water when the fuel runs out and I have to burn smelly heating oil!!! For those who didn’t know it, my new slogan is… eat King Charles’ cream!

Frankie Dettori il fantino più famoso del mondo collui che ha vinto tutte le corse più importanti e detiene il record di 7 vittorie in un giorno a Ascott, dopo un soggiorno di una settimana, è partito ieri. Volete sapere come è arrivato fin quassù a les neiges d'antan? La nostra collaboratrice di sala dello scorso anno Mimma ha sempre adorato i bambini e da tempo voleva imparare l'inglese. Durante la scorsa stagione invernale ha conosciuto una nostra amica affezionata cliente che le ha trovato un posto di lavoro come baby sitter per accudire i 5 magnifici/terribili figli dalla famiglia Dettori! Ora è lì da maggio e con la famiglia Dettori ha trascorso un soggiorno non più sotto le vesti di collaboratrice di sala ma di baby sitter... abbiamo perso una brava collaboratrice ma abbiamo trovato dei nuovi amici... Grazie Mimma.

Frankie Dettori is the most famous jockey in the world. He has won all the most important races, and holds the record for 7 wins in a single day at Ascot. He left the hotel yesterday after a week’s stay. How did he come across Les neiges d’antan? Well, last year we had a waitress, Mimma, who loves children and had wanted to learn English for some time. During the 2007-2008 winter season, she met one of our regular guests, who found her a job as a baby sitter, looking after the five magnificent/terrible children in the Dettori family! Mimma has been with the Dettori family since May, and stayed here with them, no longer as waitress, but as a babysitter… We have lost a valuable member of our staff, but we have found some new friends… Thank you, Mimma!

Ieri sono andato vicino al lago Maggiore dal mio amico Tullio Zenone che mi ha riempito un furgone di rami di pino argentato per fare gli addobbi natalizi. Come vuole la nostra tradizione è un lavoro che aspettiamo fino all'ultimo a fare...Oltre agli addobbi mi ha procurato 24 orchidee. Di ritorno sono poi passato dalla Val Cerrina vicino a Casale Monferrato da un altro amico che mi ha dato 1 etto di tartufi bianchi...Nell'immagine qua sopra le orchidee nel bar in attesa di essere distribuite nelle camere. Le orchidee che troverete nelle camere sono di una specie unica e si distinguono dalle altre per il loro profumo: sanno di tartufo!

Yesterday I visited my friend Tullio Zenone near Lake Maggiore, who filled my van with branches of silver pine for our Christmas decorations. It is a cherished tradition at our hotel that we wait right to the very last moment to do the job… Anyway, together with the pine branches, he also found me 24 orchids. On the way back, I went through Val Cerrina near Casale Monferrato, and dropped in to see another friend who gave me a hundred grams of white truffles… In the photo, you can see the orchids in the bar, before being placed in the various guest rooms. So, the orchids that you will find in your room are of a rare and unusual species, notable for their fragrance… of truffles!

Qualche tempo fa ci hanno contattato due commercianti di vini che navigando in internet hanno scoperto la nostra cantina. Hanno prenotato una camera e l'indomani dopo una bella cena hanno visitato la cantina e scelto i vini che volevano acquistare per poi rivendere ai loro clienti collezzionisti. Nella nostra cantina abbiamo delle vecchissime bottiglie di Barolo dei più disparati produttori e i due commercianti mi hanno fatto un offerta: compriamo 500 bottiglie di vecchi vini per 5.000,00 €, abbiamo lasciato passare un pò di tempo e qualche settimana fa si sono rifatti vivi per concludere l'affare ma mi hanno detto che a causa della situazione economica mondiale il valore dei nostri vini si era abbassato a 4.000,00 € !.... ho rifiutato l'offerta e dopo aver parlato con lo chef Damiano abbiamo acquistato un bel pezzo di carne e fatto un bel brasato con un fantastico barolo figlio dei fiori annata '68 !!! Questo brasato sarà il piatto forte della stagione invernale 2008/2009!

Some time ago, two wine merchants contacted us, after they had discovered our cellars during their internet searches. They booked a room, had a fine dinner, and the day after, they visited our cellars and chose the bottles that they wanted to buy so that they could sell them to their customers, collectors of rare and valuable wines. In fact in our cellars we have some very old bottles of Barolo by many different winemakers. The two traders made us an offer: we will buy 500 bottles of old wines for 5,000 euro. We waited for a time, and a few weeks ago they contacted us again hoping to clinch the deal, but they said that, owing to the global economic crisis, the value of our bottles had dropped to 4,000 euro! I refused the offer, and after having spoken to our chef Damiano, we ordered a fine piece of meat, and made a fantastic brasato (braised beef) with a superb Barolo, a child of the flowers… year 1968! This braised beef will be a highlight of our menu for the 2008/2009 winter season!

Ieri sera sono arrivati dei clienti che anni fa vivevano a Bruxelles dove hanno conosciuto Luisa Montrosset. Il giorno che l'hanno conosciuta aveva in braccio il mio libro Whimper Carrel & Company una croce, 400 foto un altro Cervino. Con Luisa e mio fratello Luca nel 1996 per poterlo pubblicare abbiamo costituito una casa editrice: l'Eubage! Luisa ha introdotto questi signori all'alpinismo invitandoli in una palestra di Bruxelles ad arrampicare per la prima volta! Ora sono diventati degli alpinisti appassionati....anche se c'è un unica stradina che porta a les neiges d'antan tutte le strade portano a les neiges d'antan...

Yesterday, some guests arrived. Years ago they lived in Brussels, where they met Luisa Montrosset. The day they met her, she was holding a copy of my book Whymper Carrel & Company, “a cross, 400 photographs, a different Cervino”. It was with Luisa and my brother Luca that in 1996 I formed a publishing company, Eubage, specially to publish this book. Luisa introduced these people to climbing, inviting them to a gym with an artificial climbing wall in Brussels where they discovered the sport! They are now keen rock climbers. The moral of the story is: even though there is just a single narrow road that leads up to Les neiges d’antan, in actual fact, all roads lead to Les neiges d’antan…

Continua a nevicare e grazie alle abbondanti nevicate abbiamo anticipato l'inizio della stagione e ci sono ospiti che soggiornano durante la settimana e non più solamente nel week end come nelle settimane passate. A un mio cliente che fa il macchinista sulla nave di un ricco industriale americano ho chiesto se avrei avuto difficoltà a trovare lavoro come maggiordomo su una nave... Pare ci siano speciali agenzie a cui rivolgersi che fanno incontrare l'offerta e la domanda di lavoro sugli yatch. Mi ha detto che innanzi tutto non bisogna soffrire il mare e poi con il mio curriculum di gestore d'albergo non avrei avuto difficoltà e che lo stipendio di una figura come la mia sarebbe di 5.000,00 € al mese !!! Ci farò un pensierino per l'estate quando a les neiges d'antan non c'è mai tanto lavoro...mi piace l'idea di navigare e servire in una situazione di promisquità...

It’s still snowing, and, thanks to the abundant snow, we have opened our season earlier than usual, with guests staying on during the week and not just at weekends as previously. I asked one guest, who works as the engineer on a ship belonging to a wealthy American industrialist, whether I would be able to find a job as a Purser on a ship… Apparently there are specialized agencies that match supply and demand for staff on board yachts. He told me that, first and foremost, you must not suffer from sea-sickness, and, considering my curriculum as a hotel manager, I wouldn’t have great difficulties in finding a job, and that the salary for my sort of position would be around 5,000 euro per month! The idea is tempting in summer, when there is never very much work at Les neiges d’antan. I like the idea of sailing the oceans, looking after people in a restricted environment…
